CILA Stories: Lupita aka “Nuestro Angel”

Lupita, 35, is commonly known as CILA’s house angel. She is the soul of the home, and in normal times you would hear her music throughout the house every morning, as she cleaned all the common areas and made sure all volunteer rooms were nice and tidy. Volunteers come and go, but Lupita is the one constant that you can always find at the CILA volunteer house. Throughout the 2 years she has worked here, many volunteers have come to adore Lupita. In her bodega, there are handwritten letters from former volunteers expressing how much they appreciated her during their stay – “thank you for being a mother figure for me”, “you have inspired me to treat the people that surround me with more love”, “you made me feel at home here”, “this house wouldn’t be the same without you” are just a few examples of the kind words that people have said about her.

When asked what her experience working alongside volunteers from all over the world has been like, Lupita expresses the same affection and appreciation, saying that working here has led her to meet amazing people and form strong friendships.

Lupita came across CILA when her oldest son Miguel was 1 year old. Back then, she was working in a store and had a lot of difficulties finding someone to take care of him and his older sisters. When Miguel was offered a spot in CILA’s daycare, Lupita says she was very relieved, and a lot of stress was taken off of her shoulders.

This is the essence of CILA – a place where parents can leave their kids and go to work knowing their children are not only safe and cared for, but also taught socializing skills and the building blocks of education. Stories like these are exactly why CILA was founded – the original vision was to take care of kids so that their parents, mostly single mothers, could go to work.

Lupita says she was impressed with how well everything worked at the CILA daycare everyday when she would come to pick up Miguel. The teacher would offer her a recap of how Miguel’s day had been, what he had learned and how he had felt throughout the day. Lupita says she felt really welcome and at home in the community that existed between the mothers and the teachers of CILA, so when she was offered the job as a housekeeper she gladly accepted. Not only did she get to be closer to her son, she also got to become part of an organization that she is really proud of. Since then, Miguel has graduated from the daycare and moved on to CILA’s preschool where he continues to learn and grow alongside his friends. Shortly after being hired at CILA, Lupita had her youngest son Aaron. Aaron started coming with Lupita to work when he was 2 months old, and as Lupita puts it, the daycare and the CILA house feel like second homes to him. According to Lupita, every child who has been enrolled at the CILA daycare feels very at home there, due to the warm and inclusive atmosphere created by the teachers and the volunteers. Lupita says that “The daycare helped a lot of people who, like me, needed a place where our kids can be taken care of. We know that when we leave our kids here they treat them really well and take good care of them. The teachers are excellent with the kids, and the whole staff works everyday to make sure this is a comfortable and safe space for the kids”.

When asked what words she would use to describe CILA and the impact CILA has had on her life, Lupita became teary-eyed and had to take a moment. “CILA has been a blessing in my life – the words that come to my mind are love, trust, gratitude and hope”.

CILA has faced a continued struggle to meet funding needs for both the daycare center and the preschool. The unforeseen Covid-19 crisis had an additional devastating effect. Although they have been able to attend to the emergency needs of the community, the board was faced with the difficult decision of recessing the daycare center until they can regroup to face the challenges of funding in a pandemic era. While Lupita has remained in her full time position at CILA, the challenges of juggling work and childcare are evident.

As a closing statement, Lupita would like to send a message to the former volunteers she has come to know:

”Hi everyone, how are you? I want you all to know that what you have done here at CILA is greatly appreciated; your love and dedication to the kids, making them laugh and giving them confidence to trust a volunteer – a person not from their family- is so appreciated.

Thank you for everything, I hope you come back soon to create more smiles!”

Mucha gente conoce a Lupita como el ángel de la CILA casa. Es el alma de la casa, y cuando está limpiando la casa su bonita música suena en toda la casa. Ella asegura que todos los cuartos de los voluntarios y las zonas comunes sean agradables y ordenadas. Los voluntarios vienen y se van, pero Lupita es la única persona que siempre puedes encontrar en la casa. Ha trabajado aquí más que 2 años, y en este tiempo se ha vuelta amigos con voluntarios de todo el mundo. En su bodega hay letras en las cuales voluntarios han expresado su amor hacia Lupita. Dicen: “gracias por haber sido cómo un mamá para mí”, “me has inspirado a tratar a la gente con más amor”, “me haces sentir cómo que estaba en mi propia casa”, “esta casa no sería la misma sin ti”.

Cuando preguntada cómo ha sido su experiencia trabajando junta a los voluntarios, Lupita dice que ella también quiere mucho a todos sus amigos que ha conocido en este lugar y que el trabajar aquí le ha dado la oportunidad de conocer a gente maravillosa y formar amistades nuevas.

Lupita encontró a CILA cuando su hijo Miguel tenía 1 año. Lupita estaba trabajando en una tienda, y le costó mucho trabajo encontrar a alguien que pueda cuidar a Miguel y sus hermanas mayores cuando estaba trabajando. A Miguel le ofrecieron un lugar en la guardería de CILA y Lupita dice que esto le ayudó muchísimo a ella. Entonces podría ir más tranquila a trabajar.

Esta es la esencia de CILA – un lugar en donde los padres pueden dejar a sus hijos e ir a trabajar sabiendo que los niños están seguros, atendidos y están aprendiendo muchas cosas. Historias como esta son la razón por la que esta organización fue iniciada. La visión original era cuidar a los niños para que los padres puedan ir a trabajar.

Lupita dice que le impresionó mucho lo bueno que todo funcionó en la guardería – cada día cuando venía para recoger a su hijo, la maestra le decía cómo había sido el día del pequeño. Lupita dice que se sintió muy bienvenida en la comunidad que existía entre las maestras y las mamás de CILA. Cuando le ofrecieron el trabajo en la casa de CILA aceptó para estar más cerca de su hijo y también para formar parte de esta organización. Miguel ya se ha graduado de la guardería y después de las vacaciones va a estar en el preescolar de CILA, donde seguirá aprendiendo al lado de sus amigos.

Poco después de conseguir el trabajo, Lupita tuvo su segundo hijo Aaron. El empezó a venir a la casa cuando tenía 2 meses y Lupita dice que la casa de voluntarios y la guardería son como su segundo hogar. Según Lupita, todos los niños que estaban en la guardería se sienten así debido al ambiente cálido que le dan las maestras y los voluntarios al lugar. “La guardería ayuda a muchas personas que, como yo, necesitamos un lugar donde dejar a nuestros hijos y que sabemos que los dejamos y los tratan muy bien, los cuidan. Las maestras son excelentes con ellos y todo el personal que trabaja lucha dia a dia porque los niños tengan un lugar cómodo y seguro para ellos”.

Cuando pregunté a Lupita cuales palabras usaría para describir CILA y el impacto que ha tenido en su vida, se puso emocional y tenía que respirar profundamente. “CILA en mi vida es una bendición y las palabras que se vienen a mi mente para describir CILA es amor, confianza, gratitud y esperanza”.

Ahora CILA, cómo muchas organizaciones, se ha encontrado en una situación muy difícil económicamente. La crisis imprevista del covid-19 ha tenido un efecto grave en la capacidad de CILA para financiar los servicios que normalmente ofrece. Aunque han podido ayudar a las familias de la comunidad, la junta directiva se enfrentó a la difícil decisión de cerrar temporalmente la guardería hasta que puedan superar los desafíos de la financiación en una era pandémica. Aunque Lupita sigue con su puesto de tiempo completo en CILA, los desafíos de tener que trabajar y cuidar a los niños son evidentes.

Como una declaración de cierre, Lupita quiere enviar un mensaje a los voluntarios que ha conocido:

“Hola – cómo están? Quiero que sepan que su trabajo aquí en CILA es de mucha ayuda. Su amor y dedicación hacia los niños hacen que los niños rían, sientan amor hacia ellos y se sientan seguros con una persona que no es su familia. Gracias por todo lo que hacen por nuestros niños y espero que vuelvan pronto a hacer sonrisas para los niños”.
