La Educación Es El Arma Más Poderosa/Education: Our Most Powerful Weapon

(Scroll down for English)

ENGLISH VERSION

My name is Cinthia Robledo Acuña. I am 30 years old and the mother of a beautiful 12-year-old son, Luis. I am currently a student in Bachelor of Education Sciences, a lover of sports, music, dance and teaching. I have spent the last ten years working as a teacher in early childhood education.

“When I was a child I knew I wanted to be a teacher, if anyone asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always answered “teacher”. I used to play school with my grandfather and the interesting thing is that my grandfather was the teacher. Not only did I want to be a teacher, but I also wanted to learn.

I found Hogar de los Ángeles, currently known as Centro Infantil de los Ángeles (CILA), about ten years ago as the best daycare option for my then infant son. As a single mother, I needed the possibility of working full time, and daycare services were the means for me to do so. At first, like any mother, I felt a bit of anguish to leave my little one, as it is a natural process of adaptation for both mother and son. However, the services I found at Hogar de los Ángeles gave me confidence and freedom to seek employment.
Shortly after my son was accepted into the nursery, Ms. “Juana” (Donna Quathamer) and the operational director, at that time as well as currently, Miss Paty (Patricia Palacios), offered me the opportunity to join the team as a teacher. This opportunity gave me the chance to have a better income, work being close to my son, and provided greater emotional stability. I ended up working as the teacher´s team leader for about ten years. Throughout the last decade, I have received formal professional training as well as engaged in personal development as a life project. These trainings have allowed me to provide conscientious attention and educational stimulation to my students to facilitate the important development that occurs in early childhood.

“This place is very important in my life. It is here that I have met so many wonderful people, including volunteers from all over the world. Many volunteers have remained in our hearts, although we have said goodbye with tears in our eyes promising to meet again”.  With experiences like these, one realizes that the world is full of people that embody love and a lot of light. Their values, principles, and a spirit of service, are motivational in the goal to be better every day.

Daycare service and quality preschool education are very important for the families of the CILA community. It is essential to the mental and emotional well-being of all mothers that they feel confidence, security, and calm in the institutions they select for the care and comfort of their young children. Knowing that their children are safe allows parents the freedom to enter the labor force with efficiency and effectiveness, create self-directed projects, and realize their dreams for their families. If this service is not available, or instills distrust, a mother simply cannot think clearly in anything.

CILA has been this salvation for many families. It has been the hand to give families a lift up and a chance to better their lives. It has been the home and family for many children, teachers, and volunteers. It has been the scene of many experiences and adventures; of laughs, great achievements, and learning. However, it is also evidence of the devastating effects caused by the world wide health crisis ( Covid-19) that has come to change our lives in many different ways. Families, employees, and everyone who is part of this beautiful place, have been affected by the breakdown in economic, political, social, and cultural structures. Nothing will be as we once knew it.

Finally, I want to thank all of the people who make it possible for CILA to exist; in the past and into the future. Behind all the beauty that this story conveys, are many people working hard to make it all possible. Thank you for deciding to support CILA. Without your help, none of this would be possible. Your support helps guarantee that our students and their families are positively impacted by the best tool in our existence:  “EDUCATION”.
